Cayman: Prisoners Celebrate Literacy

The Prison Service’s annual Literacy Day, which took place last week at Northward Prison, featured a Read-athon and an arts festival. On stage, seven contestants presented songs and poems that they had written.

The event recognizes prisoners’ efforts to improve their reading skills year-round. It also seeks to motivate more to join the literacy programme.

It’s 89 participants train and use the library. The efforts of staffers – a literacy coordinator and an English teacher – are supported by volunteer reading mentors. The prison service offers City and Guilds qualifications in basic literacy and CXC English examinations
